Finding Family:
Telling Our Stories
As told to Watson at age 4
by Dad & Daddy (Duncan & John)
Dad and Daddy met in college way back in 1991. We were best friends and we studied together, went to dinner a lot, and decided we wanted to become a family together.
In 1993, we celebrated our Holy Union. Father Ted Karpf, who had helped us understand how we could build a family together, presided over the ceremony. The church was full of people who love us, including Grandma, Grandpa and GranJan, Granddad and GranLyn, all of your aunts and uncles, and so many of our friends. Dad and Daddy held hands and we told everybody that we loved each other and that we would always love each other. They all cheered and clapped and we ate cake and food, laughing and hugging and having a great time.
Well, we got busy with school and work. Dad was a lawyer and daddy was a teacher. After more than ten years of all of that hard work, you were born! We’ll never forget the day you came to us—you were four months old, just a tiny little baby. And you had such a grumpy look on your face! You were so cute.
Marisol lived with us then, too, so when we brought you home, she would rub your head and bring you a bottle to drink. She took good care of you. A few weeks later, Isaías was born and he came home too! All summer, you boys woke up in the middle of the night and Dad and Daddy would change your diaper and give you a bottle. We were all so sleepy!
Then, in September, Marisol and Isaías went to live with Margarita, their aunt. We were sad that they would not live with us anymore, but happy that they could be with Margarita and Ivan and Yulisa. Even though they live in a different house, our families are connected and they will always be our family, too.
Ever since then, we have played together, gone to the zoo and Disneyland, and visited Santa together. We love to do things with them and play with Chester and Shaggy Doo when they come over to the house.
When you were ten months old—still a baby—we went to court and adopted you. It was the perfect day—we were surrounded by friends and family. You clapped when the judge pronounced us a family and everybody laughed and clapped. We had a party that night with cake and quesadillas and all your friends.
We’re pretty lucky we found you. Because of you, and Marisol, and Isaías, and Chester, and Shaggy Doo, we are one big happy family!
